About Wimbledon
Wimbledon is a
suburb in south west London,
located within the London Borough of Merton and is located
approximately 7 miles (11 km) from central London and only 14
miles (22 km) from London's Heathrow airport. Wimbledon boasts
excellent
transport links buy train and bus to and from central London as well as
other local towns including Kingston upon Thames, Croydon, Wandsworth
and Sutton. Wimbledon also has a fairly new tram system with links to
Croydon and beyond.
There is a wide
variety of shopping in Wimbledon. The
Centre Court shopping centre and the Broadway hosts most of the main
stream shops while just up the hill, on the edge of the common, is
Wimbledon Village with designer outlets and more independent shops.
There are many restaurants and public houses in
Wimbledon offering a wide range of food and drink to suit everybodys
palate. Wimbledon also has many hotels and bed and breakfast
accommodation.
In the town centre of Wimbledon you will find 3
theaters
and an 9 screen Odeon cinema that now houses an Imax 3D auditorium.
For over one hundred years, Wimbledon has been
internationally known as the home of the English Tennis. In fact the
first Wimbledon lawn tennis championship was held in 1877 at the
Nursery Road ground.
When it comes to sport Wimbledon is not only famous for
it's tennis. In 1977 Wimbledon football club rose from non league
status and entered the football league. By 1986 they had reached the
top league and the following season won the FA Cup beating Liverpool.
